Australian medal hopefuls Jian Fang Lay and Miao Miao aim to work their familiar magic on Sunday as the women’s, men’s and mixed doubles table tennis competition gets underway at the Commonwealth Games.
Lay and Miao have won bronze in the women’s doubles since table tennis was introduced to the Games at Manchester in 2002.
They will face Canadian duo Carmen Lee and Anqi Luo while Australia’s Games rookies Vivian Tan and Peri Campbell-Innes play Nigeria’s Janet Effiom and Olaide Atinuke.
Australia’s top ranked female and male players, Miao and William Henzell will contest the mixed doubles against Uganda while Campbell-Innes and Nam Ho Oh face Tanzania and Simon Gerada and Lay play Kenya.
Qualifications for the men’s singles competition will continue on Sunday, after the Australian team triumphed in all their matches on Saturday to proceed to the second qualifying round.
Qualifications for the women’s singles wrapped up on Saturday with all five Australians making it into the main draw.
Australia’s wheelchair athlete Catherine Morrow will attempt to qualify for the athlete with a disability competition.
